Seven common questions about affiliate marketing

Some people are familiar with affiliate marketing, others are not. Find the answers to seven common questions we receive from affiliates and advertisers that are new to the game.

What is an affiliate, and who can be one?

Affiliate, publisher, channel or profile owner are all expressions meaning the same. An affiliate is an individual or a business, that promote the products and services of other businesses in exchange for commission. Examples of typical affiliates are influencers, content sites, cashback and loyalty concepts, voucher sites.

The expression affiliate comprises any website, channel or profile owner with an audience. Practically anyone with a) internet based content and b) an audience can be an affiliate.

How do I earn money as an affiliate?

You earn money by sending consumers to the online store of an advertiser. When the consumer performs a purchase, you receive a commission for the sale with which you have contributed. Affiliate marketing is performance based, which explains why the advertiser pays for sales rather than the advertisement itself.

How does a tracking link work?

The tracking link you retrieve using your Adtraction account is a unique URL. It includes your channel ID, which allows us to ascribe a specific action from the link to your channel, as well as the advertiser’s program ID. As soon as a click is registered through the link, a cookie is placed in the users browser. This cookie allows Adtraction to track whether or not the visitor ends up performing a given goal, for example performing a purchase. Cookie duration differs from program to program. Once the visitor has performed the specific action, for instance by reaching the landing page for order confirmations, a pixel informs our systems that the sale has occurred, and the sale is attributed to your user, provided that the sale was performed during the cookie duration.

How can I promote products if I don’t get them sponsored?

The traditional affiliate marketing model does not include sponsoring of products. As an affiliate you have to promote products in other ways, either by owning the products yourself, or promoting products suitable for your audience.

Does it cost anything to use Adtraction?

No, it is completely free for affiliates to register and use Adtraction. Adtraction get paid by advertisers that utilize the network for marketing purposes. However, it is worth mentioning that the advertisers don’t pay fixed fees either – they pay for performance when their affiliates generate sales or leads.

How can I know that my links and ads work properly?

Statistics from tracking links are shown in the reports in your account within 60 seconds. Simply click on your link and check if the activity was registered in the report. You can for instance use the Ad report under Reports.

When and how do I get paid?

Payments are created the 15th every month, and the payment happens the 10th the month after. The money is then transferred to the account you have specified in your account settings.
